My mother in law is clingy towards her son (my husband). She is passive aggressive and constantly gives him the guilt trip (i.e. she would say all she wants is to be a small part of his life, he is the center of her world, she is lonely and depressed, it is her one wish that... etc).
It has been 10 years that I have known her and in all this time I have hoped that she would get over it. While I don't think it's exactly personal, meaning she would probably have the same problem no matter who the "other" woman was...it does translate itself in hurtful ways. like when she doesn't speak English around me (regardless of whether this involves other family members or if it's just my husband and herself). or she only directs her comments towards him...the weird thing is, when he's not around, she's fine w/ me. like she can talk to me etc. i don't get it...
When I share excited news to her, she never reacts with enthusiasm. Like when I started beading and I gave her a pearl necklace. She said "thank you" but she didn't seem to really like it. I just wanted to show that I was thinking of her. Or anytime my husband tries to say I make something well (I'm a big baker), she wouldn't respond. Or when I cook for her, she doesn't say it's good (but she does when anyone else cooks).
i just don't know what else to do...and i guess, does it even make sense to keep trying? i really want to have a good relationship with her b/c i want her to be around when we start having children.
so i guess my questions are...
1) do you think she is aware of her actions? is it possible that she just loves her son so much she doesn't realize that she's being exclusive towards me?
2) is there hope? do you think she will admit it if i really tried talking about it with her? or would that make it worst b/c it brings everything to light?
I dont think things can continue the way they are...b/c as a result of her clinginess, my husband is pulling away from her...which makes the cycle worst...
any advice would be appreciated
